Tatami are from Kyoto, so is furusaki byoubu and the paper used on the wall and windows, but most other things are made with local materials.

Thank you. The thinking was to have either Alexa or a light switch, and that an Alexa would be less obtrusive. In the end I struggeled to make it work as I wanted, so now I'm back to a light switch.

I hadn't notied that before. Looks like it happened in the editing. And that the image I have put above the video to hide the stand for the top down camera was without natsume. You can even see a ghost mizusashi at 22:40. The natsume should only be moved one in this temae, and that is when I move it up one shelf at 20:14, after that it should be on the top shelf the rest of the time.

I didn't interpret it as critique :) Interesting to see this editing mistake so long after it was done. Unfortunately RUclips don't allow me to upload a replacement video in place of one that exist. Because I think the editing mistake would be easy to fix, but it would count as a new video with new links, and all comments gone. Which I don't want.

I don't own a ryurei so that will be difficult. I can feel you pain and loss of seiza, since I got an infection in my knee (bakers cyst) I have struggled big time to sit seiza, even cross legged is a challenge.

Taiko fusuma, that is fusuma with white paper on both side, are opened different than regular fusuma. This is too be able to push it flush with the wall, while regular fusuma you have to stop earlier to have somewhere to hold when closing it later.

Yes and no. I haven't seen any book describing the process of the host also drinking tea, other than in a group "game" where roles are based on lottery draw. Having said that, it is no all that uncommon that the guests ask the host to have the last bowl of usucha, or even ask if they (the guest) can be allowed to whisk up a bowl for the host. There are historical records of "solo" temae, where there is only the host. Again I haven't seen any books explaining it, but in most cases when I have seen it instructed the teacher will have the host remove the fukusa before having the tea. I have seen many different details around this.

@@Warigeiko my official Urasenke book always shows both Furo and Ro nagashidate oteame with host drinking the last cup, but when guest returns his chawan host washes it and instead of finishing phrase a guest invites the host to have a cup of tea, he also brings him sweets

This is not a normal fusuma, but a taiko fusuma. Their handeling is different from normal fusuma because they are pushed all the way flush with the wall. If your sitting inside this room and going out. With taiko fusuma you would: - Pull the door half way open with right hand using the handle - Push the door all the way open with left hand With normal fusuma you would: - Open it a tiny bit with left hand, using the handler. - With left hand on the side of the door open it half way - Right hand would open it the rest of the way

I don't attempt to recreate the Tea of Rikyu or any of the old masters. Instead, I'm satisfied with practicing it as I learned from my teachers. It is almost impossible to know what Rikyu did and didn't do. To my knowledge, Rikyu left no writings or instructions for us to follow. Some people hold that Namporoku is the best source of information about Rikyus tea. It claims to be written by Nampo, a student of Rikyu, but it is widely accepted not to be the case. Tachibana Jitsuzan, the likely author of Namporoku, was born 64 years after Rikyu died. When even the best source of information about what Rikyus tea is more than a century removed, I think it prudent not to be sure that you know what he did or thought. I'm neither a Zen monk nor a vegetarian, and naturally, I have a different view on these topics. I serve fish and meat in my kaiseki, as long as my guests don't object to eating it.

I believe it is pretty common to do, but I have never received any teachings on how to do it. So I usually do the temae the way I normally would and then somehow transition into being my own guest. I do this every morning before doing anything else. A good meditation to start the day

Remembering something in the context you need the knowledge is good practice. So I would encourage you to try to stay a few seconds a head of the video, and only let the video catch up if you don't remember what your suppose to do

I think the bowl was made by Paul Fryman, a gift from friends for my 40th birthday. I think you can find his work online.

The rule is that if you have a ubaguchi kama, that is with the lips going down into the opening, the hishaku should be on the shoulder. If you have a kama with the opening going up out of the opening, then you should hang the hishaku over the edge. My kama is neither, it is straight. In most cases I would like to treat it like a ubaguchi. But, when the hishaku is suppose to face toward the outer line of the robuchi like in this temae, that doesn't work. The hishaku hangle ends up touching the kama "shoulder" and it becomes very unstable. If I had a ro meant for sumi I could adjust the kama height to make it work, but with an electric ro that is not an option, so I have to adjust hishaku placement instead.

@@Warigeiko Thank you for your comment. I understand. Considering the height of the KAMA, your RO is electric, and if you put the tip of the hishaku inside, the height is not enough and it is difficult to handle about temae.
